Apulia is gaining fame on Instagram and TikTok, so hurry before more tourists discover this slice of heaven on earth. With this 7-day road trip, you'll explore some of the region's best spots: from the vibrant port city of Bari to the ancient rock churches of Matera and the unique Trulli houses in Alberobello. Relax in the seaside resort of Monopoli, visit the White City of Ostuni, and marvel at the spectacular Castellana Caves. Apulia's diverse charms are sure to surprise you.

Travel Duration

This tour is perfect if you have about a week. With less vacation time than that, consider spending your time better in Tuscany or in one location like Lake Garda or Lake Maggiore instead. If you have two weeks of vacation, check out our other extended itineraries that take you all the way to the heel of Italy's boot or up to the north of Puglia (Gargnango & Vieste).

How to Get There

The easiest way to reach Puglia is by flying into Bari. BRI Airport has regular flights from all over Europe. If there are no direct flights from your hometown, you can also fly to Rome or Naples and then take the train to Bari.

Where to Stay

There are fantastic agritourismos, trulli, and airbnbs throughout the area, and since everything is relatively close together by rental car, you have plenty of options. You could also base yourself in Bari or Monopoli for the whole week and take day trips to the recommended destinations. However, we think staying in a cave dwelling in Matera is a unique experience, so we suggest a tour with two base stops of 2-3 nights each plus one night in Bari.

Bari

Day 1: Start your journey in Bari, the vibrant capital of Apulia. With its well-connected airport, Bari is the perfect starting point for exploring the region. If you arrive in the morning, one day is plenty to discover the old town, "Bari Vecchia," with its narrow streets and historic buildings. Don't miss the Basilica of San Nicola, where the remains of Saint Nicholas are kept. Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront promenade, enjoy the soothing sounds of the sea, and savor local specialties like "Focaccia Barese" or Orecchiette. In Bari, there's even a street dedicated to pasta-making stands! In the evening, indulge in fresh seafood at one of the charming restaurants and soak up the city's lively nightlife.

Day 2 Morning: Pick up your rental car early in the morning and head to Castel del Monte. This stunning octagonal fortress is a true highlight and well worth the detour. Plan to spend about 2-3 hours exploring before continuing your journey to Matera.

P.S.: You probably won't have time to visit all the attractions we recommend in one afternoon. Choose the ones that interest you the most and save the rest for another trip. Apulia has so much more to offer—you'll want to ensure you have enough time to enjoy the other cities.

Day 2 Afternoon & Day 3: From Castel del Monte, head to Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world! This unique city features houses and churches carved into the rock, known as the Sassi. Wander through the Sassi Barisano and Sassi Caveoso districts, visit the underground cistern Palombaro Lungo, and explore a cave dwelling to learn about the city's fascinating history. Matera is especially enchanting in the evening when the lights illuminate the stone facades—perfect for a romantic stroll and a delicious dinner.

P.S.: For detailed information on the top highlights, travel tips, and history, check out our City Guide to Matera and the information at each attraction on the map.

We highly recommend staying in one of the cave dwellings—it’s a unique experience. Whether you stay for one or two nights depends on your budget and preferences. One day is enough to explore the old town, but if you enjoy light hikes, Day 3 is perfect for that: park at the entrance of Murgia Materana Park and enjoy the fantastic view of Matera from the “Murgia Timone” viewpoint. Later, you can visit the Crypt of the Original Sin, just 20 minutes outside of Matera.

On Day 4, explore some of the most beautiful towns in the region. Spend 2-3 hours in Alberobello, famous for its charming and unique Trulli houses. These distinctive white stone houses with their conical roofs look like something out of a fairy tale. Stroll through the Rione Monti district and marvel at the over 1,000 Trulli. Be sure to visit the Trullo Sovrano, the largest and only two-story Trullo, and learn about the history and construction of these unusual buildings.

Since Alberobello has become quite popular, aim to arrive as early as possible, ideally before 10 a.m.!

Day 4 Afternoon:

Just 15 minutes away lies Locorotondo, one of Italy's most beautiful villages. Perched on a hill, this charming town is known for its circular old town, which gives it its name. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the whitewashed streets and admire the elegant “cummerse,” the typical Apulian houses with their pointed roofs. Visit the Church of San Giorgio Martire and the Church of San Rocco, and take in the panoramic views over the Itria Valley, dotted with vineyards, countless trulli, and olive groves. Pair your lunch with a regional wine—we especially recommend the white Locorotondo DOC!

Good to know: Locorotondo is famous for its white and sparkling wines, named after the village.

Detour

If you have the time and inclination, take a detour to nearby Martina Franca. It’s another picturesque town. Wander through the old town and visit the Basilica of St. Martin (but check the opening hours!). Depending on the time, you can also enjoy dinner here before driving 40 minutes to your hotel in Monopoli.

Alternative Accommodation

Consider staying at Agriturismo Masseria Aprile, a fantastic agriturismo where you can stay in trulli just 2 km outside Locorotondo. However, it's extremely popular, so you'll need to book at least six months in advance, and prices range from 200 to 230 euros per night.

Monopoli

Day 5: After all the city sightseeing, it’s time for a beach break! Monopoli is a popular seaside resort with several lovely beaches. The crystal-clear water in Puglia is stunning, and you’re sure to be impressed. Note that there are many cliffs and rugged rocks here, so be sure to pack swim shoes! Monopoli itself is small but charming. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, stroll through the quaint old town with its colorful houses, and make a quick visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Madia. You can take some picturesque photos at the old harbor with its traditional fishing boats. For meals, be sure to try the fresh fish and seafood!

Day 6: Day Trip from Monopoli

Monopoli is a great base for several day trips. The Castellana Caves are a must-visit, as is Ostuni, and the town of Conversano is also quite charming. If you have an extra day, we suggest spending more time here (unless you don't mind packing up and moving on, in which case you can continue traveling south).

Ostuni

Ostuni, also known as the Città Bianca or the White City, should definitely be on your list. Situated on three hills, its dazzling white buildings make a striking impression from a distance. Start your visit with a stroll through the old town, climb the steep streets, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding olive groves and the sea. Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its impressive Gothic facade, and take a break at one of the cafés on Piazza della Libertà, the town’s main square. A half-day visit is sufficient, but we recommend staying for lunch—there are several excellent restaurants to choose from.

Where to Stay?

We prefer Monopoli as a base over Polignano a Mare because it has a cozier feel and doesn’t seem as crowded. Plus, there are some good beaches nearby. However, you can find accommodations throughout the area. With a car, you can easily reach the beach and take day trips from any location.

### Day 7 Morning:

If your flight leaves in the evening, you have time in the morning to visit Polignano a Mare. This popular town sits on steep cliffs above the sea, offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic. Stroll through the narrow, bustling streets of the old town and enjoy one last gelato at the famous Piazza dell’Orologio.

P.S.: If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city, you might prefer to stay in Polignano a Mare instead of Monopoli.
