Trieste has plenty to offer for a stay of two to four days. Below are some of the top highlights we recommend for a two-day visit.

Stroll through the Austrian Quarter

One of the best things you can do is to simply walk through Trieste's historic streets. Trieste was the maritime jewel of the Habsburg empire and you will find beautiful buildings in the Neoclassical, Baroque and Art Nouveau style everywhere. Wander through the delightful and take an instagram-worthy photo. Of course, you will also find numerous cafés, shops, bars and restaurants here.

Drink a coffee at the Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia

Visiting Trieste's main square, the is a definite must. Drink a coffee at the famous Caffe degli Specchi and immerse yourself in the city's atmosphere. If the architecture reminds you of Vienna, don't be surprised. Trieste belonged to Austria until 1918, and the impressive buildings are in the same architectural style as Vienna's Ringstraße. Visit the romantic piazza again at night to see the beautifully illuminated buildings.

Take in the view from Castello di San Giusto

Take half a day to climb up to the and cathedral of Trieste. Perched atop a hill, the castello provides you the best panoramic views over Trieste's rooftops. The medieval castle dates back to the 16th century, but the first fortified settlement originates in ancient Roman times. The museum will give you a glimpse into the city's Roman and military past. When you enter, you can take a closer look at the original two Moors, , from the town hall.

You can reach the castle on foot in about half an hour or take the tram.

Tip: you can take the elevator at the underground car park right up to the hill instead of walking

Admire the remarkable mosaics of Trieste's Cathedral

is right next to the Castello, so visit both at once. A symbol of Trieste's long religious heritage, the cathedral is a mix of architectural styles. Inside, take a close look at the impressive Byzantine-Ravenna mosaics at the apse.

Tip: Climb to the top of the bell tower for a beautiful vista of the city and the Gulf of Trieste. However, if you don't have enough time, you will get better photos from the Castello.

Enjoy the sunset at the port of Trieste

This is an absolute must in this seafaring town. It's best to go to the end of the 250meter long and enjoy the sea breeze. Take in the the wonderful view of Trieste's waterfront, stand arm in arm with your better half and be enchanted by the crimson sunset. Or even better: enjoy your dinner at Piers while the sun sets. The food is delicious, and if you manage to get a table right by the sea, it makes the evening perfect. Afterwards, head up to the rooftop bar for a cocktail to top off the night.
